A run back at the wall.....

Ok, I have fallen away for a few day, OK months. But I am going run back and the wall and see what happens.

For those of you that are new here to my blog, I write about what ever happens to tickle my mind, if anything does. I find it very hard to write if I am not moved to write.  Like right now I am writing mostly because I keep telling myself I should write more. even if it is not right right, I should still write.
As you can see I am now fighting the impulse of trying to see exactly how my times I can write the word WRITE or a form of it write any time I can find a right time to write it.   Not because I like to write "write" but because my brain is stuck in with the word.

So I will get it all out now right, write, written, etc.  Well that is all I have in me for now....
Actually I am at work and looks like I may need to do something.  So I guess I will write more later.

Damn, here it goes again.... write, right written..... also once in a while I will include a video review or a just as a change from writing (hey the impulse is gone!).

Pictures

I attended a funeral today.  Like many funerals in the recent past (as I get older the recent past is not as recent as it use to be) they had a photo stream showing the deceased through the years.  Pictures that were sweet, funny, touching, all of the above.

As with most funerals where I have seen these I started thinking.  I have made these for friends who have had relatives die.  And even if I did not know the person after looking at there pictures as I scanned them, touched some up that were damaged, cropped some and corrected faded colors in others,   and assembled them in to a video, I always feel as if I knew they person by the end.  Even if we never met in life.  I know I dont know them like their friends and family, but seeing the moments that they took pictures of somehow made them real to me.  Brief captures of time that will live on past when the life of the person is gone.

Pictures are fairly easy to understand.  Light enters a lens and is captures on a media be it film or a light sensor that saves it to a disk.  But once this happens, that moment has a permanence that the moments before and after do not. That to me is magic.

I am not in a lot of pictures. As a videographer and photographer I am asked to use my equipment for a lot of circumstances that arise.  I can not remember the last school activity I say and enjoyed without worrying that it was properly caught for posterity.  Also I am not a fan of having my picture taken.  Like most, I feel that age has not done me many favors.  So I take pictures, and I am rarely in them.

Days like today remind me that this is wrong.  Pictures or me are not taken of me to prop my self esteem or make me a model.  Pictures are there for history.  Abraham Lincoln to me is a bit more real to me than George Washington because I can see a picture.  Sure we have paintings of George, but we have photographs of Lincoln.

Someday I will be gone and people will want pictures. To say here he was and here we are doing something with him.  They will never want my picture on a piece of money or in a text book, but to those whom I share the moments of my life these will be invaluable.  Don't get me wrong I have no overblown sense of myself.  Merely the realization that each one of us is important enough to someone, that pictures or us are important to them.  By choosing to not have pictures taken, due to age, weight, color or amount of hair, whatever. We are doing a disservice to those that love us and will still be here when we ware gone.  Pictures are a gift of ourselves to those that shared those times with us.  To not have a picture taken and share that moment, whatever moment that is, suddenly seems very selfish.

Next time you get the chance pull that special someone close, smile big and get a picture. Someday it will mean more to them than you can ever realize.  Not because of how you looked, by simply because you were there and they can remember it all the more clearly thanks to that little piece of magic.

Another Day..

Another day another dollar...

I heard that statement while growing up.  I heard it often from adults.  Usually in response to the question, "How's it going?" or "Working hard?"

I always assumed if the were only making a dollar a day then they must not like their job very much.

Now that I am old (41 years as of last Sunday) I understand that this was an easy answer to a question.  An answer like, "Fine, and you?" that we all use when we assume the the person asking does not care, and the we answer with a question that we do not care to hear the answer too.

I should not say that.  There are people who care, and truly want to know the answer to, "How are you today."  The answer is why?  Are do they really care?  Or do they just want to hear good news?  Or are they the other side of that coin and are hoping to hear bad news, so they can feel better about their life not being what they want it to be.

As I get older I find that I less and less want to answer questions like, "How are you?"

There are people I will answer.  My wife, my best friends, some relatives.  The problem is, we rarely know if people want to hear the answer or if they are just being polite.

How many time have you asked someone, "How are you?" and then regretted when they actually answered?  You know the person.  You ask, and then they let you know.  They let you know and know and know and know....

I fear being that person.  So I usually say, "Fair to good here, I could complain but no one really wants to hear it!" (this is said with a smile).  The response is more often than now, "That is true!"

So how do we know when someone is polite and when they really mean it?

I think it is shown by the circumstance.

If the "How are you?" is said standing up, they are being polite.  They are in a posture that is temporary and easy to exit from.

If it is said sitting down, they are more likely to mean it.  Also if think if there is a table between you and the other person it means less than if there is no table.  If you are sitting over a meal and someone asks you "How are you?" then they probably do not want to hear about your child sticking an uncooked pinto bean up their nose, or your grandmothers polyp situation.  if you are both in chairs with a small table or no table then I believe that the subject is open to wider use. At this time who they person is that you are talking to comes into play.  Your spouse or best friend is open season, they know your warts and have smelled your farts.  Parents are a a bit different, in my case this is a smaller scope than that with spouse/best friend (others will have a different view here). From this point on I think the rules are judged by each participant. You go where you feel is comfortable.  I usually use the others conversation to decide where I can go.  If they talk cooking, I can speak about cooking and perhaps what my kids will and won't eat.  They talk cooking and reactions to different food, I can speak about cooking and what I am allergic to but no references to what the allergic reaction is.  They speak of allergic reactions, I can speak in vague references to what mine are. For example if it causes diarrhea, I say , "That tears me up, and  I regret eating it."  Unless it is a good friend or a friend in the medical field, they can usually take the truth.

I find that my lines of acceptance are a bit more defined than others.  It always amazes me when someone I do not know all that well shares very intimate bedroom details.  I may joke and cross the line of good taste now and then, but rarely do I get detailed.  Somethings are best left to the imagination.

With new means of communication and privacy getting harder and harder to come by, perhaps some feel that nothing is taboo to discuss.  I feel there still are certain things that are, depending upon the person I am speaking to.

Some say that is changing who you are depending upon who you are with.  I think it is adjusting the conversation to suit the comfort level of all involved. You may not have a problem sharing every detail, but the person you are speaking to may have an issue hearing it.  I can hear details and be unfazed, while my wife may hear the same details and be grossed out.  So does that mean that people who are sharing more than the person then are speaking to are rude, or merely more comfortable with the conversation so the listener should adjust?

Personally I think the person sharing should adjust for their audience. If for no other reason than to stick with the beliefe, "Better to be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt."

Galaxy S4 vs Iphone 5 discussion

Recently I had an exchange with an individual on Google+ pertaining to the Galaxy S4 being better than the iPhone 5.  While I believe in the end choice wins out over everything else and what is good for one is not always good for another I felt like I would defend my choice of the iPhone 5.

He started by claiming this link showed that others agreed with him.

http://www.businessinsider.com/the-galaxy-s-4-is-better-than-the-iphone-5-2013-3?op=1

So here is my response

Interesting article, I will address it point by point:

Point 1
The Galaxy S 4 is faster than the iPhone 5.

"Man I wish this iPhone 5 was faster!", is something I have never heard anyone say.
The A6 chip has done everything I asked of it with speed and dependability.  I have even edited video on it.  How much speed do you need to access the web, read email, play some games and MAKE PHONE CALLS?  I see no need to switch from my Jaguar XJ8 to a V12 version, I will never use the speed the V12 offers.  I never use the speed the V8 offers, I feel the same about CPUs.  Speed increases especially when touted due to multiple processors is merely a marketing gimmick.  Need more speed get a laptop, need even more? Get a desktop.

Point 2
The Galaxy S 4's screen is bigger.

Ahh they old size debate. I will not even get in to cliches here.  What I will say is, I want my phone to fit comfortably in to a pocket, maybe pants pocket, maybe sport coat pocket.  I do not need to a phone so big it will not fit, or if it does, it looks like I have an abnormal growth where the phone juts out.  I prefer the elegant simplicity of a smaller phone that does not look like a tablet when I am not at work.  I do not need a geek badge.

Point3
The Galaxy S 4 has better camera software

This is a huge example of loading down a phone with so much software you use up perfectly good space that should be used for things that will actually be used after the 1st month (you know when the bells and whistles get old).  What do people use photos software on a phone for?  Cropping, maybe some small contrast or color enhancements.  And Yes Instagram, taking perfectly good pictures and making them look like pictures from 20 years ago.
Want better pictures? Take better pictures and use that space to store things you will really need and want. Like more pictures

Point 4
The Galaxy S 4 is more versatile.

This goes on to say, "But besides making phone calls and downloading apps, the Galaxy S 4 can be used as a remote for your compatible Samsung TV."  I am so thankful for that, wait I have a remote already. And my iPhone works as a remote on my Apple TV and my iphone will show video from my phone on my Samsung Blu-Ray player.  And there are apps that will suggest programs and other minutia like that for the iphone as well, they too are next to useless. I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7inch with the same type of stuff, and I have not used it after the 1st week. It is more bloatware like the camera software and the look away pause feature that are there only to make someone say, "Oh Neat" then never use again. In this way the branded Android phones (save for the Nexus and the Google version of the S4) are starting to be as loaded down with bloatware as laptops and PCs from big box stores.  Give me the space. I will choose my own apps thank you.

Point 5
The Galaxy S 4 is available on all major carriers including T-Mobile.
This argument is moot.  Iphone 5 is on T-Mobile

https://explore.t-mobile.com/iphone-5

Point 6
The Galaxy S 4 has a sharper screen.

This is absolutely true.  It is sad that that screen is wasted on an OS that looks just as bad at high resolution as it does at low.  It may be cliche to say, but it is only because it is true. Android apps are more often than not ugly and far less appealing than iOS apps.  As stated before I have a Galaxy Tab and most apps are very unappealing to look at, that includes Chrome.

Point 7
Google Now is light-years better than Siri.

Yes it is, I agree!  Still even on my Galaxy Tab I have yet to be overly impressed. But it should be  better, after all that is what Google does! Plus it is now on iPhone.

Point 8
The Galaxy S 4 has more memory contributing to the overall quickness of the phone
See Point 1

Point 9
The Galaxy S 4 has a removable battery
I agree that is a nice feature, does not make up for the others, but nice.

Point 10
Users can expand the Galaxy S 4's storage
I have never needed more than 64gig I clean my phone and tablet out ever so ofter and choose not to be a digital horder.
Plus see Point 9.

MY POINT 10
From Tech.Fortune.Com

Android gets 97% of malware. Apple iOS 58% of enterprise.

here is the link
http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2013/04/14/apple-enterprise-android-malware/

I believe in choice.  If you choose to use Android I agree you should.  I find the openness to be intriguing, but when I work, I prefer iOS.

Sleep

Time for bed, so course I can't sleep. Why is it my bed is never as comfortable at night as it is in the
morning? Why is it when I lay down my mind decides now is the time to think?
Maybe I should try sleeping standing up.

Ok instead of writing today, I am trying something new.  I am posting a review of the S10-HD Bluetooth headset by Motorola.  Enjoy!
